Our Heritage

We represent the elders of our community, and we're here to tell you that our community (Neighborhood Planning Unit V) has a rich history and deep cultural roots. Even today, our neighborhood is brimming with homes, schools, community-based organizations, houses of faith and worship, parks and recreation facilities, and small and large businesses and of course our most precious resource---our people.
Our area of the city consists of six distinct neighborhoods. They are Adair Park, Mechanicsville, Peoplestown, Summerhill/Capitol Homes and Pittsburgh (yes there's a Pittsburgh in Atlanta!). These neighborhoods were formed in the post-civil war years and became the home for many African-Americans who were seeking to start families and build their communities in the Atlanta area.
We are centrally located at the intersection of Atlanta's major highway systems-I75/85 and I-20. We are a mere 2.5 miles from the city's central business district and a mere 6.5 miles from the world's busiest airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Additionally we are minutes from 3 of this country's most recognized academic centers-The Atlanta University Center, Georgia State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Many of the city's and region's most well-known businesses are here in our community. Every year over 3 million folks come into our neighborhood to see the Atlanta Braves play at Turner Field. Many of the city's dignitaries utilize chauffeured cars from our very own Carey Limousine Service and yet others charter private motor coaches from Seven Stages Bus Company. Both Yellow Cab Co. and Rapid Cab Co. have operations in our community. And of course we are also home to many smaller businesses such as Overhead Door Company, A&D Soul Food, Health Quip, and Jimmy's Barber Shop.
As you can imagine, we believe that our people are the most important aspect of our community. They are the strength and the fabric that keeps us connected to each other and the hope for a better future for us all. Many of our residents are active in the many community-based organizations that continue to provide guidance and civic leadership in our neighborhood. We also believe that these same people, along with others around the city and even the world, will join together to help make our community the safest, cleanest, and most livable community in the city.
